Poetry or Stage Name: Hakeem Furious

Activism: My activism is focused on fighting the injustices caused by a western power structure and changing the way people of color are treated and perceived. I believe that a lot of these problems can be solved through the medium of art, which makes way to host an assortment of community events throughout the week and personal development workshops. I work with kids using poetry to help them on their path to self-discovery and with my community to build a rise in social and economic commerce.

Peer Support: I believe there is an organic connection that happens in the community, where I come in contact with people who have been diagnosed or are afraid of being diagnosed and connected them with different organizations in the community where they feel like they can comfortably be integrated into them.

I also use my artistic talents to talk about mental health problems that plague my community and create safe spaces to talk about those problems. This summer I attended Alternatives and learned that the mental health system is set up for structural discrimination against people of color.

Gigs: I would like to be booked to speak at University, Colleges, and confreres for poetry and keynote speaking.

Recovery Movement: I want to tell other health activist that once we created these positive communities and peer support networks, that the focus of our work should transition into finding and solving the the root of these main problems.

Poem:

Dinner tonight with the Ego and I,
not set for the table turn.
How does one find the key when locked on a narrow edge?
A deadscape in a limelight life,

not set for the table turn.
Who do you think you are?
A deadscape in a limelight life,
Do you think she thinks of me?

Who do you think you are?
Have you ever seen the inside of a damaged heart?
Do you think she thinks of me?
Admit one into the entrance of your mind.

Have you ever seen the inside of a damaged heart?
I’m taking pictures with the echoes of the brain.
Admit one into the entrance of your mind.
Dinner tonight with the Ego and I.

Health care or Health Insurance success story:  Our artists connect people with all kind of activities that are part of this a huge untapped social justice youth network. There is a poetry scene in every city in the US, with events throughout the week in those cities. Poetry, and all arts teaches expression to people people trouble shoot their problems in an interactive way. When I was 5 my father murdered my mother.  I was traumatized and treated like a ticking time bomb. I was shuffled from therapist to therapist, until high school when I found spoken work. In a matter of months, i was being integrated into a local and international community of people who are interested in turning their pain into a transmutation of self. This altered the path of my life. Now I am a national touring poet and implementing the same change around the country. I am helping poets add small tweaks to make their networks into peer support interventions. Artists like me can guide people back to their own selves. In a society where mental health is taboo and brushed under the rug, teaching someone to find their voice can be the first steps into their own healing.

Infographic: Our artists are not just about art for art therapy, but we move beyond that for Art as social justice, and art as community development.
